Welcome to the Winter Special Newsletter 2014 / 2015

By Chris Slinn, Joanne Webb and Angela Clancy

Dear Reader,

A Warm welcome to the Winter newsletter of NEWFORD Nursing Home.

We would like to start by wishing everyone a very

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2015

Next year our ambition is to keep producing a newsletter every quarter to share experiences and news in our Home. These can be sent out on email if you like – just make sure Chris has your email addresses by dropping them into the front office or ask for your free copy.

In order to provide an excellent service to residents in our home we believe it is essential that we are both professional in our management and compassionate in our care.

The Kitchen Staff – Carole,

Kelly, Lisa, and Jayne

At NEWFORD Nursing Home we have one of the best teams in any Kitchen , led by head Cook Carole Roberts. Our residents are central in everything that we do and we are continually striving to look at ways of improving and offering choices of food for them so their lives are fulfilled. Kelly Turner, Lisa Proudlove and Jayne Eardley play a very important role in assisting Carole with the menu’s and we would welcome any ideas and suggestions that you may have.

Exercising choice is very important to us all which is why we have a flexible daily schedule. Residents enjoy their breakfast and lunch from a full menu. Our tea and cake trolley is, not surprisingly, very popular indeed, 3 times per day.

Our catering team maintains the highest standards of traditional home cooking, providing a choice of meals and tempting snacks around the clock served in either the dining room or in your own room if preferred. We also cater for residents birthdays with a lovely birthday cake and your visitors are always welcome to join you at mealtimes.

All of us enjoy seeing John painting away in his studio in the stargazer conservatory.

When residents come into a home they suddenly stop being involved in things which they should be doing – but not at Newford Nursing Home.

John was a Fireman on the Steam railway in the 1950’s – he has a model he made of the Steam Train in his room. National service called and John found himself inspecting radios to be fitted into aircraft for the RAF. Following National Service, John went into driving Tankers before going ‘On The Buses’.

A graduate of Burslem College of Art, John’s love of art and painting developed alongside his shifts and now carries on until this day.

Allison, Fiona – his daughters and Nigel his son often take John out to get more artists materials for his paintings and model building.
We are planning an art exhibition showing examples of John’s work in the new year.

Relatives Profile – Doris Shrigley’s Daughters – Norma & Lynda

Doris Shrigley is 103 years old and will be celebrating her 104th Birthday on April 14th 2015

She has 2 daughters – Norma and Lynda are both familiar faces at Newford Nursing Home and both visit their Mum, Doris who has been well cared for by our dedicated and loving staff.

Norma Shrigley is a volunteer at Newford and always helps with our special events, she is also a great supporter of our monthly cabaret’s and usually turns up in her silver dancing shoes.

Norma is a keen ballroom dancer and has won several certificates, medals and cups, won at local Dance Competitions. Norma’s career at the Methodist Book Centre in Hanley took her to many schools and churches in Staffordshire and Cheshire. Norma retired at 59 to look after Doris after 34 years of service.

Lynda Devlin is Doris’s younger daughter and her career involved working with children and families, it is this for which she was awarded an O.B.E in 2009. This was presented to Lynda at Buckingham Palace by HRH Prince Charles.

Residents special occasions

All of us enjoy celebrating special occasions every year about all sorts of things in our lives yet for many residents when they come into a home they suddenly stop being involved in things which they should be included.

In our home we are looking at ways to develop a positive practice in how we encourage our residents to be involved in special occasions and still to be an integral part of their

families. Happy Birthday to Lillian Williams – see pic with Matron Joanne and Care Assistant – Gemma.

Winter Special News

Our objective at NEWFORD Nursing Home is to implement ways that all residents, despite their ability, are involved in the celebrations in a positive and interactive way. Many initiatives are already in place in Newford Nursing Home.

THE WINTER FAYRE AT NEWFORD

At present Hollie and Claire from the Activities team are getting ready to put up the decorations up around the Home ready for Christmas. This creates a wonderful warm glow around the home for residents, relatives and the staff. The Winter Fayre was a massive success and a lovely day for all the residents, staff, families and visitors. Here are some photographs from the day.
